The DCL Fan team is currently sailing onboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship on a 5-night Bahamian sailing. We have a glorious itinerary for this cruise – we spent yesterday at Nassau, which is essentially an “at-sea day” for most of us as we’ve all experienced much of what there is to do there, with today being a Castaway Cay day, tomorrow is our Lookout Cay day, and the last day is another day at sea.
Early this morning, around 6:45 am or so, we could hear the ship’s rudders loudly trying to steer, so we looked out from our verandah to see that Castaway Cay was near. We could also hear the winds whistling through our verandah door, although it was tightly closed and locked. Once we saw the ship pass by the same area of the private island a second time, both my roommate and I had a feeling that it was too windy to be able to dock the ship safely.
Sure enough, at 8:15 am, the captain came across the announcement system to deliver the sad news that after making several attempts to dock, they simply were not able to due to the high winds and gusts. The winds were steady at 30 knots with gusts up to 40 knots. Winds over 34 knots are considered gale force, so we totally understand why the decision was made.
So, although we understand why the decision was made and obviously know that this isn’t the first time it’s happened, it stings a bit differently when our team is onboard the ship instead of just reporting about it from afar. Of course, we are all a bit sad that we won’t be able to soak in that Castaway Cay sunshine, check out the merchandise that’s arrived since our last visit, or have our toes in the sand on Serenity Bay. We can always wish that the BBQ lunch served at Cookie’s and Cookie’s Too could be brought onboard, but we know that isn’t something that can be done.
The great part is that we are on the beautiful Disney Fantasy, and we’ve now been given an entire extra day to soak in everything the ship has to offer.
See ya real soon, Castaway Cay!

Our of 13 Disney cruises we’ve missed Castaway Cay 3 times due to high winds, and we’ve also missed our parasailing adventure 4 times due to windy conditions around the island. Hoping for better weather for our next cruise this fall.
Wow, Bev! That’s really a lot. This is my 11th cruise and the first time I’ve missed Castaway Cay. Fingers crossed for better weather during your fall cruise!
