In 2024, when Disney Cruise Line began visiting their newest island destination in The Bahamas – Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point – one of the most significant conversations centered around the long walk in the hot sun from the ship to the island.
When DCL announced this new destination, they shared that they would be working with a deep respect for the natural beauty of Eleuthera, aiming to preserve the island’s environment while creating a welcoming destination for guests. From the very beginning, the project prioritized sustainability and conservation, working closely with local experts and environmental organizations. Structures were built inland and elevated to protect the shoreline, and boardwalks were carefully placed to avoid disrupting native vegetation. Solar energy powers much of the destination, and even the landscaping features plants native to The Bahamas, helping to maintain the natural ecosystem while showcasing the island’s authentic charm.
We knew all of this when the island officially began welcoming guests. We could see in the concept art that the ship was docked a good distance away from the island. Knowing all that ahead of time didn’t make the walk down the pier from the ship to the island and back any easier at the end of the day. Some had hoped there would be tender boats to shuttle folks back and forth. The sun is brutal, and when you’re in it all day at the beach, the last thing you want to do is walk all the way back to the ship.
On a recent visit to Lookout Cay, I was thrilled when I received the message displayed in the image below from Guest Services via the online chat in the DCL app. It was such a relief to see that DCL was being proactive and sending the message out to all guests two days before our scheduled Lookout Cay visit.

I called right away and easily set up an appointment for the shuttle service to the island, and my nerves were settled right down. Before receiving this message, I was afraid I’d either have to avoid going out to the island altogether or just suffer through melting in the sun while walking on that pier. Honestly, it isn’t the longest walk ever, maybe ten minutes, but when you aren’t used to being out in the blazing sun like that, even one minute can feel too long.
The entire registration process for shuttle access was so easy and confidential. When I called Guest Services, I was able to choose from several available appointment times. I was told when and where to meet up – the process went very smoothly, and I was glad that DCL had figured this out for their guests. When I arrived at the meet-up spot, there was a check-in desk, and chairs were set up for people to wait to be called. My appointment was at 10:45 am, and as you can see below, it was not busy then.

Before I even had the chance to sit down, I was called to proceed to Deck 1 to board the shuttle to the island. Another family ahead of me was being loaded onto a special shuttle with space for a wheelchair.

Once I boarded the shuttle, I was off for a day at the beach full of sunshine!

Visitors should be aware that there is a limited number of sand wheelchairs available at the Goombay Cultural Center on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no charge to use these.
Personal and electric wheelchairs are able to board the tram that runs on Disney Lookout Cay; however, the sand wheelchairs do not fit in the tram, so guests need to be able to transfer.
When I was ready to return to the ship, I saw a-frame signs directing guests where to wait for the return shuttle. A handful of people were already waiting, but thankfully, there were umbrellas to stay under to block the sun. I waited around ten minutes for the return shuttle.

All in all, this experience worked out very well for me, and if you are on the fence about visiting this beautiful tropical oasis because of what you’ve heard or read about the amount of walking or the length of the pier, don’t let it deter you as Disney Cruise Line has this great option in place for guests with mobility disabilities.
