First Impressions of Disney Destiny, A Stunning Ship With One Big Question

After sailing on the Disney Destiny, I'm sharing my thoughts on the ship's look and feel, what works beautifully, and what left me conflicted as a Disney fan.

Going into my recent cruise onboard the Disney Destiny, I already had big opinions on the Marvel characters displayed on the stern of the ship and the Black Panther theme of the Grand Hall. I really tried hard to take it all in with no judgment, and now that I’ve seen it in person and stood in the spaces I wasn’t sure about, I feel confident in sharing my thoughts as a huge Disney fan.

Let’s start with the big picture. First of all, the ship is absolutely gorgeous. From the moment you step onboard, the space feels layered and undeniably dramatic, with familiar sweeping staircases and curved balconies like those on the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure. Rich metallic tones throughout the Grand Hall catch the light from every angle. The chandelier immediately draws your eye upward, while the stage and open floor below make the hall feel like a true gathering place rather than a pass-through atrium. It’s so dramatic without being overwhelming, and the overall design leans toward a more elevated, almost cinematic vibe compared with some of the earlier ships in the fleet. It feels modern yet unmistakably part of Disney Cruise Line.

I truly love the well-themed spaces throughout the ship, even the Marvel-themed ones like The Sanctum and SAGA. These areas feel immersive and thoughtfully designed, not slapped on for branding alone. The Sanctum, in particular, feels moody and stylish, a space where the Marvel influence works in its favor.

SAGA also impressed me with how flexible and energetic it feels, especially as the day turns into night. These spaces make sense as themed venues tucked into the ship.

Where I struggle is with the Grand Hall.

With the ship’s overall theme centered on heroes and villains, I really don’t understand why a Marvel character was chosen to anchor the most iconic space on the ship. The Grand Hall itself is gorgeous. The scale is impressive, the finishes are beautiful, and it absolutely delivers on drama. But something doesn’t hit for me emotionally. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Black Panther as a character, especially when he’s there to greet me as I step off the elevator, but he doesn’t hit me in the feels the way Hercules, Sorcerer Mickey, or even Mother Gothel might have. Disney has so many heroes and villains in its stories to choose from.

That emotional connection matters, especially in a space meant to define the ship. I understand Disney owns Marvel now, but this isn’t Marvel Cruise Line. It’s still Disney Cruise Line. For me, the standout spaces should scream Disney first and foremost. I’m completely fine with Marvel-themed spaces around the ship. I just want the heart of the ship to feel rooted in Disney [not Marvel] storytelling.

I also can’t get over the chandelier in the Grand Hall. It’s cool looking, and I love how it dances with color at different points during the cruise. Technically, it’s impressive. Emotionally, it leaves me cold. It doesn’t feel like Disney magic to me. It feels stylish, not sentimental.

With all that said, none of this takes away from how stunning the Disney Destiny is as a whole. The ship feels cohesive, luxurious, and thoughtfully designed. Even when I question certain creative choices, I still find myself admiring the execution. This is a beautiful ship. I just wish the most iconic spaces leaned a little harder into classic Disney heart.
