Disney Lookout Cay From a Parent’s Perspective

I feel very fortunate to have been one of the first to visit Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and like most people, had no idea what to expect before we docked! This cruise was already a little different for me since I traveled without my two-year old son but I still saw everything through the eyes of being a parent. We have visited Castaway Cay as a family and have special memories of the beach and visiting Mickey! After having visited both islands, I feel Lookout Cay is completely unique and our day there would look very different than a day at Castaway Cay.

Bring a Foldable Stroller

First to address the elephant in the room, the pier to get to the island and the tram is a 1/2 mile or 15 minute walk. The only transportation to the island is specifically for those guests with a disability or needing special assistance; meaning the majority of people are walking it. Additionally, there is currently not shade along the pier. Truthfully, the walk wasn’t as daunting as it looks from the ship but there is no way I could get my toddler to make the walk and back. We will absolutely bring a travel stroller with us to get him to and from the ship. One thing to keep in mind, you will need to be able to fold up your stroller to get on the tram that takes you to all the amenities.

Utilize the Complimentary Wagons at the Goombay Tram Stop

Speaking of strollers – once you’ve made it to the Goombay tram stop, there are strollers and wagons available! They are both free of charge and first come, first serve. The only problem is they really would be more helpful to get to and from the ship but still a nice amenity.

Make Sebastian’s Cove and Rush Out Gush Out a Priority

Once at Lookout Cay, there are SO many amenities for the entire family! I would say this is one of the biggest areas this destination stands out. Rush Out Gush Out is located right along the family beach and is very impressive splash pad area for kids. Whereas, Sebastian’s Cove is more aimed at little ones who aren’t able to go down slides just yet. If I’ve learned anything about being a toddler parent, kids LOVE a splash pad and both of these water play areas are phenomenal!

Watch RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration At Least Once

Watching Mickey and friends lead the Junkanoo parade was such a special moment and entertainment like I’ve never seen from Disney! The music is so fun – I heard Bahamian versions of “Apples and Bananas” and “Knick Knack Paddy Whack” and most kids were dancing along. I personally would recommend watching it as a parade which starts by the tram stop and ends at the Goombay Cultural Center. That way you can really see the characters dance and interact with the band plus see all of the stunning Junkanoo costumes. When watching from the cultural center stage, it’s pretty cramped and hard to see all of the performers.

Make a Junkanoo Headpiece at the Goombay Cultural Center

Not only can you make a memorable souvenir to take home, it’s a great opportunity to escape some of the heat and learn about the people and culture of Eleuthera. To me, these are the moments that set this destination apart from other private islands – a real destination, with real people and a rich culture you’re immersed in. Plus it gives your kids a variety of activities to make it a full-day adventure!

Lunch is Served in Two Locations on the Family Beach from 12 – 2 PM

Be sure to not miss lunch on the island! Especially if you like flies… too soon?? There are two locations for families to have lunch True-True BBQ and True-True Too BBQ. On our itinerary, we were cleared to disembark onto Lookout Cay at 10:30 AM so lunch time came pretty quickly! Also with lunch only lasting two hours, you don’t want to miss out! The menu is very similar to Cookie’s BBQ at Castaway Cay plus the addition of Bahamian flavors like pigeon peas & rice with either marinated chicken or seafood, yucca fries, fried okra, and plantains. I appreciated some of these more unique dishes for myself and was happy to see the usual chicken fingers that my son loves so much! I like the menu enough to trust Disney will get the preparation… and the flies under control.

There were some obvious hiccups on the first day but I truly believe Lookout Cay will only get better with time. It’s a completely unique destination for Disney Cruise Line and I can’t wait to take my two-year old and my entire family to visit too!
