I have a Disney Cruise Line confession that might upset some longtime cruisers: I actually prefer Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point over Disney Castaway Cay.
I know! Castaway Cay has decades of Disney Cruise Line history, and I genuinely love it. But after visiting Lookout Cay twice and returning to Castaway Cay recently, I’ve realized which destination I’d rather spend my beach day at.

Disney Castaway Cay welcomed its first guests in 1998, becoming one of Disney Cruise Line’s most beloved destinations. The private island in the Bahamas offers family beaches, snorkeling, bike rentals, character experiences, and Serenity Bay, its adults-only beach. Its established landscaping and convenient amenities make it easy to understand why so many cruisers consider it a favorite.

But my most recent Serenity Bay experience wasn’t particularly… serene. Once I took the two tram rides from ship to Serentiy Bay, I struggled to find an available lounger or hammock, with many taken up with a towel simply strewn across them. With the new neighboring Mickey & Minnie family cabanas, there are children playing near the area which made the beach noisier than expected. The water / ongoing sandbar is shallow, with a mostly rough bottom that wasn’t especially comfortable for swimming or walking. I’m someone who wants to spend most of my beach day IN the ocean, I couldn’t help but compare my last lovely experience enjoying the adult beach at Lookout.

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point opened in June 2024 on the island of Eleuthera. Unlike Castaway Cay, this destination sits on a larger Bahamian island and incorporates local art, music, food, and Junkanoo traditions into its experiences.

Guests can enjoy family beaches, snorkeling, nature trails, cabanas, and an adults-only Serenity Bay. The destination also features Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash and the colorful Rush Out Gush Out water play area.
Now, I completely understand the complaints about Lookout Cay’s lengthy, exposed pier and transportation logistics. Accessibility and mobility concerns deserve attention.

However, once I reach that beach, Eleuthra Euphoria (Goslins Spirited Seas Ocean Aged Run, Pineapple, DOLE Whip Pineapple) in hand, I’m in heaven.

The powdery sand, incredibly blue water, and beautiful ocean views are almost unbelievable. You can see why Disney chose Eleuthra for its natural beauty, maintaining that ecological respect and integrity. During my visits, I also had an easier time finding beach chairs and hammocks, and I personally preferred the food at Lookout Cay.

Of course, beach conditions, crowds, and experiences vary by sailing. I’m not suggesting everyone will share my opinion. Castaway Cay will always have a special place in my heart, but right now, Lookout Cay is my favorite Disney Cruise Line beach destination. I’m already looking forward to my third visit later this month!
