Disney Cruise Line has officially revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will serve as the godparent of the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the fleet. The announcement comes just weeks before the ship sets sail on its maiden voyage from Singapore.
The choice feels fitting. Downey helped launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, anchoring one of the most successful film franchises in history. His run in the role spanned more than a decade and culminated in Avengers: Endgame, which brought in nearly $2.8 billion worldwide. He was also named a Disney Legend in 2019 and is set to return to the Marvel universe as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, hitting theaters December 18.
“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Experiences and incoming Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company.
Downey shared his excitement in his own style: “It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest.”
The Disney Adventure leans heavily into Disney storytelling, with seven themed areas onboard. Marvel fans, in particular, will have plenty to explore. Marvel Landing on the upper decks will feature Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run, the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest at sea. Over in Disney Imagination Garden, the live show “Avengers Assemble!” promises high-energy stunts and special effects as heroes and villains clash. Younger cruisers can head to the Marvel WEB Workshop inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club, where hands-on training and tech-inspired activities await.
Beyond Marvel, guests can expect the hallmarks of a Disney Cruise Line vacation: character meet-and-greets, Broadway-style entertainment, immersive stateroom designs, concierge offerings, and more than 20 dining and lounge venues serving a mix of international and Asian-inspired cuisine.
The tradition of naming a godparent dates back centuries and is meant to bring good fortune to a vessel before its first voyage. With Robert Downey Jr. stepping into that role, the Disney Adventure is getting a blessing worthy of its blockbuster scale.
