Each fall, Disney Cruise Line transforms its fleet with Halloween on the High Seas; a seasonal celebration full of spooky fun, costumes, and themed events during voyages. One of the most iconic elements of this celebration is the Pumpkin Tree featured prominently in the atrium (or Grand Hall) of each ship. While the tree can be a perfect photo backdrop to commemorate your Halloween cruise, there’s more to the story! Everyone onboard is invited to take part in a storytelling ceremony, during which the tree “comes to life” and lights up with glowing pumpkins.
The original official backstory goes:
THE LEGEND OF THE PUMPKIN TREE
Twas a long time ago… Before the time of now, there was Halloween. Not the Halloween of today, filled with merriment and pranks, but a darker celebration. The night was filled with mystery. The moon seemed to shine a little bit brighter, and in every shadow lurked something unimaginable. This was the time of the Pumpkin King. But as the years grew on, the Pumpkin King grew weary. He needed someone to help him keep the history of his favorite, most beloved holiday. So he reached in his head and retrieved four pumpkin seeds, each one representing a different characteristic of his wicked personality. He planted them around and watched as the seeds grew into beautifully morbid trees. The tree blooms only once a year. Deep within its dark, gnarled branches hold the remnant spirits of Halloween memories gone past. According to the legend, once everyone has learned the who, the what and the why, the spirit of the Pumpkin King will bring the tree to life.
Here are the unique Halloween Trees found aboard each ship: These first four trees are more classically Halloween looking, featuring twisted roots and spooky designs with varying faces. Throughout your voyage, you’ll notice more and more classic jack-o-lanterns sprouting traditional carved faces.

The Wish class introduced a more modern and elegant collection of Pumpkin Trees to better match the Grand Halls they reside in:
Disney Wish – Boo
Boo is the Enchanted Pumpkin Tree and brings a lighter bark, and mystical face. Her story ties into wishes and transformation, even including a reference to Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage.
Disney Treasure – Ginger
Ginger is the newest addition, debuting on the Disney Treasure this Halloween season. Inspired by the Arabian setting of Agrabah, Ginger has a unique look with carved, elongated gourds and exotic flair you might find in that region of the world.
